Research conducted for
the upcoming Storage Expo exhibition
has revealed the need and desire to have an
effective working relationship with their IT
Director was further highlighted by the poll
revealing that a massive 80% of storage
professionals want to learn how to manage
their IT Director.
Jon Collins, CEO and Managing Director of
Freeform Dynamics and one of Storage
Expo’s keynote speakers, said that many
outsiders thought of an IT department as one
entity with everyone working towards the
same goal.
However, he said the reality is senior
figures are getting pulled in multiple
directions at once and there is a lot of
fragmentation, such as silo-ed applications,
independent SANs, separate management tools
or new technologies deployed alongside the
old.
He said: “It's a jungle in there, and the IT
director has to take the role of chief plate
spinner. A good part of anyone's job,
therefore, is to work with them to ensure
your own, ever-growing plates stay
spinning.”
Mr Collins pointed out that the storage
arena is all about four things: capacity,
throughput, service levels and sourcing. The
research of over 400 organisations revealed
that 40% believe the most important key
factor for measuring the effectiveness of
their IT Director is capacity. For 33%,
service levels were key, while 25% said
throughput was most important and 2% cited
sourcing.

National Identity Fraud Prevention Week,
the major annual awareness drive, began
today, and this year, campaign partners from
across the public-private sector divide have
come together to warn Britain's businesses
of the risk identity fraud poses to them,
their employees, their customers and their
suppliers.
Two sets of independent
research commissioned by Fellowes and
the National Fraud Authority
exclusively for National Identity Fraud
Prevention Week (NIDFPW) show that one third
of small and medium-sized businesses have
been impacted by fraud and that British
consumers are experiencing a corresponding
crisis in confidence, with only 3% feeling
completely confident the organisations they
deal with handle their personal data
responsibly. The NIDFPW partners have
therefore come together to publish a 28-page
guide for businesses to launch a dedicated
online resource centre, outlining the risks
and offering tips on how to keep corporate
data safe, and advice on how to overcome a
breach should one occur.

The
new Energy Savings Calculator from Riello
UPS helps data centre managers,
electrical contractors and consultants
compare the green credentials of Riello
uninterruptible power supplies to competitor
systems and the European Code of Conduct for
UPS Energy Efficiency.
According to a recent study by Datacenter
Dynamics, Energy Efficiency, Power
consumption and Total Cost of Ownership are
all key areas of concern for Data Centre and
IT managers*. With this in mind, Riello UPS
have developed an online calculator to help
these customers quickly see the range of
savings that can be made by using Power
Protection from Riello – even comparing the
results against an average competitor model
and the benchmarks set out by the European
CoC (Code of Conduct) for UPS efficiency.
By simply selecting the size of UPS
required, and setting the operating
conditions, users can clearly see how Power
Protection from Riello UPS performs in terms
of:
· Difference in Power Consumption
· Annual Energy Savings in kWh
· Annual Cost Savings
· Pollutant emission reductions in KgCO2

The EDM Group, one
of the UK’s leading document management
service providers, has started work on a
major project with Heywood, Middleton and
Rochdale Primary Care Trust (PCT) to
digitalise all inactive health care records.
The project has been scoped to overcome a
number of issues the PCT faced, including
lack of storage for paper records as well as
efficient retrieval of inactive records when
needed by medical staff.
The PCT also sees this
project as a stepping stone to the
introduction of Lorenzo as part of the
National Programme for IT – as all records
converted now will be easily migrated to
Lorenzo in the future.
The initial project
phases require the scanning of what is
expected to be around 5 million images over
a 2 year period and is followed with the
hosting of the inactive healthcare records
through EDM’s online hosted document
management solution ‘EDM Online’. This will
enable immediate, secure, auditable and easy
retrieval of any records by front line staff
at any point in time – something that is
necessary if patients that have been
inactive for a period of time require
further medical treatment, or for medical
records which need to be retrieved for
statutory requests or litigation purposes.
