WordLogic
Corporation, a leading-edge technology
company developing advanced methods of text
and information entry, announces that its
patented predictive text solution is being
adopted by people living with cerebral palsy
to help overcome challenges they face with
everyday written communication.
The WordLogic predictive text solution -
used as typing software and a research tool
- is now also being utilized as a tool to
help people living with the neurological
condition in order to eliminate the
frustrations they face when attempting to
type emails, letters, shopping lists or
complete a host of many other everyday
typing tasks.
Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the
motor control centers of the developing
brain which impairs the body's ability to
control movement and posture. Symptoms of
cerebral palsy range from involuntary
movements and difficulty with motor skills,
such as typing or using scissors, to more
profound effects such as being unable to
walk or maintain balance. These symptoms
make everyday communication tasks extremely
frustrating for people living with the
condition, but WordLogic's easy to use
software is designed to accelerate the entry
of text and information.

Agfa Graphics N.V.
is the owner of an important number of key
patents in the field of digital printing
plates. Over the past two years Agfa
Graphics has contacted a number of
competitors in order to obtain compensation
for the infringement of Agfa Graphics'
intellectual property. In the cases where no
settlement is in view, Agfa Graphics is
taking or preparing legal action.
In this context a patent infringement case
was initiated against Chengdu Xingraphics
Co., Ltd. in the Netherlands. On July
22, 2009 the Dutch court in The Hague has
issued a decision in this case.
This judgment confirms the validity of
Agfa's key patent for positive thermal
plates, European patent EP823327. However,
the infringement by the FIT plates of
Xingraphics was found to be insufficiently
substantiated by the presented evidence. On
the other hand, non-infringement was not
proven by Xingraphics either, so the court
could not grant Xingraphics' request for a
declaration of non-infringement. Moreover,
the court allowed Agfa Graphics to request
additional seizures of Xingraphics plates in
the future.
The Agfa Graphics team will now prepare the
necessary additional evidence of the
infringement of the Agfa Graphics patent in
order to obtain a decision in favor of Agfa.
The confirmation by a court of high
reputation of the validity of Agfa's key
patent EP823327 reinforces Agfa's case
against other competitors which are
infringing this patent.

Exalead, European leader of search
solutions and
information access software
in the enterprise and on the web,
today announced
that The Institute of Chartered
Accountants
(ICAI)
has selected
CloudView
to provide
comprehensive and smart access to its
corporate data.
The solution will enable its 18,000 members
to search and rapidly pinpoint a relevant
document out of the Institute’s 200,000
documents spread across a variety of
repositories.
“We
needed an enterprise level appliance that
could not only access our central website
but our entire sub-sites too, some of which
are password-protected,” explains ICAI
Webmaster, Lorna Daly. “We initially looked
at several solutions but found that they
didn’t meet our requirements in the same way
that Exalead did.”
Founded in 1888, the ICAI is the largest and
longest established accountancy body in
Ireland, with the power to authorise members
to conduct audit, insolvency and investment
business work.
The ICAI selected Exalead’s CloudView

also
automatically generates a customised table
of contents based on each search results
page, allowing users to further refine and

Global
census data capture specialist DRS
has created probably the world’s simplest
GPS device for use in field data collection
activities. The DRS GPS device is robust and
easy to use, determining exact latitude and
longitude location to an accuracy of less
than three metres. There is no menu system
to navigate; the user simply switches it on,
and once the satellite positions are fixed,
the coordinates are displayed.
The DRS GPS device, compatible with all
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), has
been developed following considerable market
research into the needs of National
Statistical Offices (NSO) worldwide and
other interested parties. The research
clearly demonstrated the need for a very
simple device that would only display the
user’s current position in terms of latitude
and longitude – something the DRS GPS device
achieves.
It has been developed for use for high
volume data capture exercises such as a
census so it was vital that the product
should be affordable – and so the
specification of the DRS GPS device was
carefully considered in order to keep costs
down.

The EDM
Group, one of the UK’s leading
document management service
providers, has secured an additional
£1million investment from its
majority shareholder ECI Partners
to support the execution of its
business plan for the period to
2012. ECI Partners is one of the
most respected private equity firms
operating in the UK today. Its
additional investment in The EDM
Group and commitment to making funds
available for future acquisitions is
a clear endorsement of the growth
potential it sees for the company.
The Group’s plan also has the
backing of HSBC, the company’s
bankers, following a business review
of the company completed earlier in
2009.
The
opportunity for The EDM Group’s
services is particularly pertinent
in the current climate as businesses
strive to reduce their operating
costs. EDM’s portfolio of services
are all services that can be quickly
implemented, have little or no
capital expenditure associated with
them and can show ROI in under a
year – unlike the norm for many
technology focused projects.
EDM provides a range of outsourced
services such as electronic/digital
mailrooms, scan on demand, online
hosting and business process
management. These services support
the vision of improving clients’
back office efficiency through
removing the paper from the process
and using technology to reduce the
number of human interventions
required. The combination of step
change improvements in business
efficiency and lower costs and/or
growth without increased headcount
is an attractive proposition for
businesses today.
EDM Group’s CEO, Sam Ferguson
commented: “This is good news for
EDM Group and a clear endorsement of
the relevance of our range of
services and solutions to the
challenges facing businesses in the
UK today. This investment will allow
us to complete the process of
evolution from provider of commodity
document management services to
technology-based paperless solutions
delivered from our new state of the
art facilities.”
ECI Partners’ John Hayhurst, added:
“Organisations are looking for
innovative solutions to the problems
of reducing operating costs while
providing step changes in efficiency
and service. They also require rapid
ROI. EDM Group’s range of
outsourcing services supported by
their use of technology offers those
solutions right now, and ECI
Partners is pleased to support their
plans for growth.”
The EDM Group is the UK's leading
document management solutions
provider with the capability to scan
over 20 million documents per month
and providing value-added document
services to every corner of the UK
from 6 locations in the North,
Midlands, South East and South West.
The company’s strength is built on
industry-leading technology
capability, including many years
experience in the development and
deployment of electronic document
management systems, both as in-house
solutions and as hosted services.
Sectors covered include financial
services, healthcare, logistics,

The EDM
Group, one of the UK’s leading document

patient records from paper format into
digital file. The transfer will enable
hospital staff to gain instant access to
patient records, significantly improving the
service offered to patients and help to save
valuable time in emergency situations.
Currently, the records are stored in four
different locations - a secure storage

hospital sites. If a patient’s file needs to
be recovered, it must be physically located
in one of these storage facilities and sent
to the appropriate ward or department. This
currently can take up to four hours, whereas
the waiting time will be near eliminated
once the documents become digital.
The project will run until November 2010 and
will see EDM convert approximately 72
million sheets of paper. The documents
include general medical records, emergency
department records, maternity records, hand
written notes, forms, care plans, x-rays,
test results and photographs - some of which
date back 25 years.

SPECIAL FEATURE
by top10-broadband
When broadband
came into being, it was the final
piece that unlocked the internet's
true potential. Before broadband,
the internet was stuck in a sludgy
low gear, that made the
embellishment of websites pointless
as it would take hours for a page to
load. Similarly, the exchange of
photos used to take an age, meaning
video was out of the question. Web
2.0, which was brought about by the
change to broadband speeds, enabling
video hosting, far more attractive
websites and just plain easier
usability. In the UK especially,
broadband use has soared, with 65%
of homes having a broadband
connection in 2008 and, to be
honest, it is hard to see this
figure dropping.
With this hike in the numbers of
people using the internet comes a
strain on the infrastructure already
in place. As TalkTalk showed when
they launched their free broadband
campaign, demand outstripped supply
very quickly, leading to people
losing connectivity altogether. In
this way, broadband providers
realise that customers have a right
to expect a certain service level
expectation when they take out a
contract with a provider; to wit,
they would expect connection, or the
speedy resolution of connection
problems should they arise, and to
receive the best speed they can
relative to what they pay and what
their location allows. They also
would expect a good customer service
when dealing with the company,
whether it be by phone, email or
whatever. For their part, the
providers in the UK by and large do
provide an excellent service though,
and the figure above tends to
demonstrate this; if the services
were sub par, then people just would
not pay for them. By not second
guessing what customers want and
dealing precisely with what they do,
broadband providers, on the whole,
tend to have a happy customer base.
So, with these expectations in mind,
which provider do you choose? Well,
choosing a provider is an equation
with three parts. The first is that
you must see who does the best
coverage of your area, as in who can
bring you the best service and
speeds you want. Second, you must
decide what speed you feel you will
need. If you are a regular
downloader of music or films or an
online gamer, you might well want to
spend a little more for a better
speed. The third and final part is
your budget i.e. what you are
willing to pay. With these in mind,
use a price comparison site and
balance these three elements to find
yourself a deal.
As a final tip on this point, if you
have your home phone and/or cable TV
with a company, check them first, as
most broadband providers do offer
great deals when you bundle all
these services together. ■

ITESOFT to provide an advanced forms
processing solution. Processing in excess of
two million incoming business documents per
annum, with 50 different form types sent in
various formats including email, fax and
post, CPP was manually sorting each of the
different forms, which was very time
consuming and labour intensive.
ITESOFT.FreeMind Enterprise enables CPP to
automatically capture and categorise each of
the different forms. ‘Our project has
completely achieved its objectives. The
speed of our forms processing is now
significantly faster. Also the availability
and quality of our management information
reporting has vastly improved, which has
enabled us to increase the level of service
that we provide to our customers. The
ITESOFT solution also has the potential to
be rolled out to other parts of the CPP
Group internationally to ensure that we
continue to improve our business processes,’
said Harry Seehra, Data Processing Manager
for the CPP Group Plc.
CPP provide a range of Life Assistance
products and services like card protection,
identity fraud and mobile phone insurance,
which allow their business partners to forge
closer relationships with their customers.
